The short answer
Rockstar describes the GTA 6 map as “very large” and presents Leonida as the most complex world the studio has ever created. Exploration is rewarded, NPCs are much more responsive, and much of the content is not marked by an icon on the map.

▸Rob Nelson describes the map as “very large” without revealing its exact area.
▸Each region is filled with buildings and residents whose appearance reflects the local culture and identity.
▸The pause-menu map drops the simplified street layout in favor of a view using satellite imagery.
▸Our interactive Leonida map catalogs confirmed locations as they are announced.
Exploration is rewarded
The game encourages you to regularly step away from the main missions. Not every event or mission is indicated by an objective or icon: some content can only be discovered by exploring.
Random events occur naturally in the world. One example shown: giving pills to a shady lawyer sitting in a dumpster, who offers some legal advice in return.
Getting around and passing the time
▸Ryde Me, a taxi app, serves as fast travel. Sharing the vehicle with another passenger can lead to real conversations during the ride.
▸Radio is still present, with more humorous advertisements — on both radio and television — than in any previous entry.
▸Snapmatic, the Instagram parody, returns. However, Jason and Lucia cannot post their own photos: as wanted criminals, they avoid leaving a digital trail.
A phone that exists in the world
The phone is no longer just an icon in the corner of the screen. When the character takes it out of their pocket, the camera moves closer to their hand and the device physically exists in the scene — an approach similar to Red Dead Redemption 2's close-up view.
Activities and wildlife
The open world includes pool, mini-golf, kayaking, the zoo, scuba diving, skydiving and the gym, among other activities.
Both at the zoo and in the wild, you can observe and study animal species: each newly discovered species is added to a list, in a system directly inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2. You can also pet dogs — or scold them.
Much more responsive NPCs
▸NPCs display a much wider range of heights and body types than in previous Rockstar games, with animations dynamically adapted to their build.
▸With your weapon holstered, targeting a character brings up dialogue options: greet them, provoke them, defuse a situation or escalate an exchange.
▸Staying nearby lets you listen to conversations, but NPCs notice when you are spying on them — or have been following them for too long — and may confront you.
▸Some NPCs may spontaneously decide to attack: Jason and Lucia are not the only armed residents of Vice City.
▸These interactions can trigger activities, creating organic situations alongside the missions chosen by the player.
The Focus system
GTA 6 introduces a Focus system that can highlight certain interesting elements in the environment: useful items to spot and things that can help you avoid the police.
