Money, heists and car theft in GTA 6

The short answer

Money plays a much bigger role than in previous GTA games: at certain points, you need to collect a specific amount before you can continue the story. Heists and car theft become fully fledged systems, with fences, tools and trade-offs to consider.

Making money

The main confirmed sources of income:

▸stealing and selling cars;

▸robbing businesses;

▸shoplifting;

▸bank heists.

Targets can be hit by Jason or Lucia alone, or by the duo. Pulling off a job together also strengthens their relationship (see Jason and Lucia).

Heists: speed versus greed

Every heist involves a real trade-off between speed and greed. Using explosives opens a safe quickly, but the blast can damage some of the loot.

Police can position themselves outside a shop or bank and wait for you to come out. Fortunately, most heist locations offer several escape routes, such as back doors.

Fences

Stolen items need to be sold to fences, in a system that once again recalls Red Dead Redemption 2. Some specialize in jewelry, while others deal in different types of goods.

A fence specializing in cars can also provide useful information, such as the access code to a police impound lot containing several vehicles you can steal and sell.

Stealing a car: a fully fledged system

Taking a parked vehicle is more complex than in previous GTA games:

▸Cars fall into different tiers; the most expensive models are much harder to steal.

▸The WAINK mobile app lets you scan a vehicle you have spotted to learn its value and other useful information before attempting to steal it.

▸Each vehicle tier and type requires specific tools: an old, poorly secured model can be opened with a slim jim, while newer cars require much more.

▸Classic carjacking remains possible: any vehicle can be stolen directly while someone is behind the wheel.

Delivering without damage

A damaged car earns you less on delivery. Bringing a vehicle back in perfect condition is harder than before because of narrower streets and much heavier traffic.

Some vehicles have sophisticated trackers that can alert the police to your location if you drive too slowly: you then need to speed up or abandon the car.
