The short answer
GTA 6 features two playable protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. You can switch between them at any time in the open world, bring them together whenever you want, and shape their relationship — romantic or strictly platonic — through your choices.
Switching between Jason and Lucia
As in GTA 5, character switching is available at any time while exploring. It may be temporarily disabled at certain points in the story when the narrative requires you to stay with a specific protagonist.
When playing as either character, you choose whether to act alone or call the other: a call or text is enough for your partner to join you, take part in an activity or simply spend time together.
Traveling together
▸In a car, you can swap seats and let the other character drive while you enjoy the ride and the radio.
▸During a chase or escape, you can move to the passenger seat and shoot while your partner drives.
▸The duo can also deliberately split up to divide the police's attention (see the Police and Criminal Profile guide).
A relationship shaped by your choices
At the start of the story, Jason and Lucia want to develop a romantic relationship. This romance is entirely optional: it develops mainly outside the main missions, as the narrative does not necessarily leave time for their relationship to grow naturally.
To strengthen their bond, the duo can explore Leonida together, go shopping, visit the hairdresser, work out at the gym or pull off a heist together. Other activities for couples are planned.
If you develop the romance, a few details are added: holding hands while walking (by holding the right trigger), holding a door for your partner, and other gestures along those lines.
What the relationship actually changes
▸No gameplay advantage is tied to a strong romance: it is about roleplay and player choice.
▸However tense things become between them, the two characters continue to support one another: the main story requires them to remain partners.
▸Their level of closeness at certain key moments can, however, influence how their story develops.
▸Ignoring some messages — for example, when Jason or Lucia reminds you to lock up if you come home late, or lets you know they are going to bed — can negatively affect the relationship.
The duo's everyday life
Jason and Lucia can live together in the same safehouse while each follows their own schedule, making their behavior feel believable within the world. These bases are covered in more detail in the Safehouses, customization and appearance guide.
Either character can also spontaneously suggest a nearby activity or job to the other: a simple trip can therefore become a new gameplay sequence if you accept.
